Beautifully balanced, with earthy tones, complementing bright cherry notes. The Bannockburn Pinot Noir goes deliciously well with roast chicken, pork and duck. Or for a meat-free option - vegetarian lasagne with goats cheese and lentils.

Carrick Excelsior Pinot Noir

Carrick Vineyards, Bannockburn, Central Otago

Carrick Excelsior - named for the coal seam which was mined during the goldrush and lies beneath the Carrick Vineyards - is our finest expression of Pinot Noir. The wine is aged in barrel for 18 months, then bottled without fining. It is contemplative, earthy, and powerful.

Carrick The Magnetic Pinot Noir image

Carrick The Magnetic Pinot Noir

Carrick Vineyards, Bannockburn, Central Otago

Named after a Kawarau River gold dredge, the Carrick Magnetic Pinot Noir is a single block, single variety and single clone wine. Unique and interesting, it is only sold direct to customers through our cellar door and wine club. The clone is Abel, said to be a cutting smuggled into the country from a famed Burgundian estate and subsequently confiscated by one Malcolm Abel. Moonlighting as a winemaker in his spare time, Abel a customs officer saw the potential in the cutting and decided to propagate the clone. It is this unique chain of events which then ultimately lead us to plant the Abel clone on a small 0.34ha plot in 2008.

Billet-Doux Pinot Noir image

Billet-Doux Pinot Noir

Bannockburn

The Billet-Doux is a Pinot Noir, made similarly to our other Pinots, but without any addition of Sulphur at arrival into the winery, or any part of the process, including bottling.

"Fascinating nose, humus, a wild and feral quality; delicious purity of fruit. Silky and textural entry with a little prickle on the tongue, showcasing loganberry, plum and wood smoke with nice chewiness from the tannins. Time adds dark chocolate and charcuterie to the brightness and vivacity, while the tannins are very fine. Rather delicious. No sulphur added."

Carrick Unravelled Pinot Noir image

Carrick Unravelled Pinot Noir

Carrick Vineyards, Bannockburn, Central Otago

Carrick Unravelled is our early drinking offering for Pinot Noir lovers. The name references the Carrick Bend our symbol of the people and land, here it is a metaphor for the more relaxed style of this wine. It's essentially a declassification of wine from the Carrick vineyards, so has all the care and attention of the other Pinots, but bottled earlier with less new oak.

The vineyard is tended by hand, allowing for careful management of individual vines, throughout the season. Each parcel is hand-harvested and undergoes a wild fermentation, in tank, before being pressed and barreled down. Care is taken to monitor and adjust cap management to the unique conditions of each ferment. Made from predominantly Dijon clones on various rootstocks, from vines planted in 1996.

2018 Bannockburn Pinot Noir - case

Bannockburn, Central Otago

This wine is an integral part of what we do and a wine that we feel represents the strong connection we have with our land. The fruit comes from a parcel of vines which are entirely grown on their own roots and are the oldest vines we have on the property, planted in 1994.

Winestate, 4 1/2 stars - Certified organic, this estate-grown red was hand-picked from 25 year-old vines and matured for nine months in French oak barrels (20% new).  Weighty and sweet-fruited, it is a sturdy young wine, with generous cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, showing very good complexity, and supple tannins.  Best drinking 2023+.  $50 (A, UK)  September/ October 2021 issue.

Cam Douglas, MS - 94 points, excellent - Very enticing bouquet with aromas of ripe red berry fruits, warm clay, silty chalk soil scents, sweet French oak barrel with mild toasty wood smoke aromas, wild red flower and raspberry. Equally complex on the palate with flavours of red berries and spicy plum, mineral soils and barrel spices of toasty wood. Firm tannins and acidity enhance a savoury complexity adding mouthfeel and length. Youthful and still developing, but drinking well now especially with food. Ideal drinking window from 2022 through 2028.
